In the old days, things used to be pretty simple: Just reach outside, hold the mirror in your hand, give it a little twist – and you were done. A mirror was a mirror.

Today, exterior mirrors are packed with electronics and carry radar sensors for assistance systems. They can be heated, have special coatings to reduce reflections in the dark, warn of blind spots and make reversing easier with automatic settings in the memory. At the same time, they are also an important factor when it comes to reducing wind resistance (or the so-called drag coefficient, Cd). For developers in the automotive industry, this once rather simple component has long since evolved into the central human-machine interface on the path to the autonomous vehicle.

Yet sometimes the garage wall will still suddenly get in the way, another vehicle will overtake far too closely, or some hooligan takes a swipe at the car at night. Another problem is that the electronics often fail due to the effects of moisture or the constant shocks and vibrations that occur while driving...
